    Biological agent closing in on weedy rampant escapee

    The tenacious and troublesome Crofton weed (Ageratina adenophora), as it is commonly known, has been running rampant in eastern coastal Australia since it ‘escaped’ from being an ornamental plant in Sydney gardens.

    It has taken hold on Lord Howe Island, a World Heritage Area, where it is found mainly in non-accessible areas, making manual removal and herbicide control impractical.

    Crofton weed is a serious environmental weed that has invaded agricultural lands as well as 150 reserves in NSW managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).  It reduces the ecological value of bush land but also affects grazing land on farms by diminishing their carrying capacity.

    The weed spread rapidly during the 1940s and 1950s creating dense infestations, particularly along waterways and disturbed areas, inhibiting native regeneration and threatening several vulnerable or endangered native species and communities, including those on Lord Howe Island.

    The new biological control agent is a rust fungus that originates from Mexico (where Crofton weed is native) and works by infecting the young leaves and stems of the plant, stunting development and disrupting its ability to reproduce.

    Dr Louise Morin, plant pathologist from CSIRO’s Biosecurity Flagship, is leading the Crofton weed rust fungus release program.

    The Speech Accent Archive: The English Accents of People Who Speak 341 Different Languages

    Over the years, I’ve met with several foreign speaking partners.

    Through conversation, I learn their language — Spanish, Korean, Japanese — and they learn mine — English. Many of them first got serious about their study of that more-or-less-international tongue with the goal of completely eliminating their native accent which, while demonstrably possible, takes so much additional effort as an adult that I’ve always advised them to just spend that time learning another language (or two) instead. Many, of course, come to that conclusion themselves, realizing that English speakers all over the world have created a legitimate culture of speaking English in all kinds of different ways, with all kinds of different accents, whether or not they learned the language from childhood. But it still makes one wonder: how many different accents do people speak it in? And what do they all sound like? Wonder no longer, for we have The Speech Accent Archive, created by Steven H. Weinberger of George Mason University’s Linguistics department, who introduces it in the video below.

    Neuroscience: The man who saw time freeze

    It’s easy to assume that time flows at the same rate for everybody, but experiences like Baker’s show that our continuous stream of consciousness is a fragile illusion, stitched together by the brain’s clever editing.     Superconductivity was first observed in mercury in 1911. Mercury superconducts at −269C, which is just four degrees above absolute zero. This is a bit cold to be of widespread practical use, and so scientists scrambled to discover new superconductors that work at higher temperatures.     New device allows brain to bypass spinal cord, move paralyzed limbs

    For the first time ever, a paralyzed man can move his fingers and hand with his own thoughts thanks to a new device. A 23-year-old quadriplegic is the first patient to use Neurobridge, an electronic neural bypass for spinal cord injuries that reconnects the brain directly to muscles, allowing voluntary and functional control of a paralyzed limb.

    Leo Tolstoy’s Family Recipe for Macaroni and Cheese

    In 1874, Stepan Andreevich Bers published The Cookbook and gave it as a gift to his sister, countess Sophia Andreevna Tolstaya, the wife of the great Russian novelist, Leo Tolstoy.

    The book contained a collection of Tolstoy family recipes, the dishes they served to their family and friends, those fortunate souls who belonged to the aristocratic ruling class of late czarist Russia. Almost 150 years later, this cookbook has been translated and republished by Sergei Beltyukov. Available in an inexpensive Kindle format ($3.99), Leo Tolstoy’s family recipe book features dozens of recipes, everything from Tartar Sauce and Spiced Mushrooms (what’s a Russian kitchen without mushrooms?), to Stuffed Dumplings and Green Beans à la Maître d’Hôtel, to Coffee Cake and Viennese Pie. The text comes with a translation, too, of Russian weights and measures used during the period. One recipe Mr. Beltyukov provided to us (which I didn’t see in the book) is for the Tolstoy’s good ole Mac ‘N’ Cheese dish. It goes something like this:

    Bring water to a boil, add salt, then add macaroni and leave boiling on light fire until half tender; drain water through a colander, add butter and start putting macaroni back into the pot in layers – layer of macaroni, some grated Parmesan and some vegetable sauce, macaroni again and so on until you run out of macaroni. Put the pot on the edge of the stove, cover with a lid and let it rest in light fire until the macaroni are soft and tender. Shake the pot occasionally to prevent them from burning.

    We’ll leave you with bon appétit! — an expression almost certainly heard in the homes of those French-speaking Russian aristocrats.

    The Vaccination Debate: Answers to Common Questions about Vaccination Safety

    Vaccinations are not mandatory in Australia, yet it is relatively standard for most children to be vaccinated against diseases such as polio, hepatitis and meningitis. However, in recent years questions have been raised about whether the problems outweigh the advantages of vaccinations, sparking intense debate amongst parents, scientists and the general public.

    Here, we take a look at some of the most common questions that people ask in regards to vaccination safety.

    Can vaccinations cause autism?

    For nearly two decades there are myths surrounding the relationship between autism and vaccines. In 1998, respected medical journal The Lancet published a paper that appeared to link the common vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) with autism. This research, by surgeon and medical researcher Andrew Wakefield, resulted in global widespread media attention. However, The Sunday Times newspaper in the United Kingdom later revealed that Wakefield had not disclosed a conflict of interest with a pharmaceutical company that was looking to patent a single measles vaccine. As such, he was taken off the medical registrar and his research detracted.

    Several years later, Japanese researchers did their own unbiased research that dispelled the myth that there was a positive correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism. (David Channon, 2014)

    Vaccination

    What are the risks associated with vaccinations?

    Every medical procedure and treatment has an element of risk attached to it, and vaccinations are no different.

    The most common side effects of vaccinations are minor, including mild fever, redness and rashes. These will generally subside within a few days. (Immunise, 2014)

    However, what has most people concerned are the more serious side effects. While life-threatening side effects are very rare, they do exist. (CDC, 2014) There is no guaranteeing that a person will not react badly to a vaccination, but any bad reactions are highly regulated by the Australian Government. All health practitioners are required to report, in detail, any adverse side effects they witness in a person to the Health Department. With this data, the Department will respond accordingly with the priority of public safety as its focus. (Government of Western Australia, 2014)

    Can the body immunise itself without vaccinations?

    Many people believe that the body should immunise itself by developing natural immunity to diseases. While the body is fantastic at fighting off many diseases, there are some that it simply isn’t strong enough to control on its own. And, if left to fight off certain diseases it can result in unnecessary serious illness or even death. This is particularly true in those with weakened immune systems such as children and the elderly.

    When the body catches a disease such as chicken pox, it fights it off and remembers how it did it. Then, the next time the body contracts the same infectious bacterium, virus or fungus, it knows how to deal with it. Vaccinations are designed to ‘trick’ the body into thinking it has previously contracted a particular disease, without actually giving the person symptoms of the disease. This means that if they were to come into contact with it, the body would recognise it and be able to fight it off. (Better Health, 2014)

    Why vaccinate when most diseases have been largely eradicated?

    We are fortunate in Australia – as well as other developed countries – that many diseases that once killed tens of thousands of children every year are now incredibly rare. This has led to the misconception that vaccines are no longer required for diseases such as polio and measles. However, the reason that these diseases are so uncommon now is because vaccination rates are so high.

    Introduction

    Competitive Intelligence (CI) is often defined as knowledge and foreknowledge about the external operating environment of the organization. The purpose of CI is to facilitate proactive decision-making by producing the needed business information into actionable form and making it available at the right time. The orientation and utilization of CI is tactical and to some extent strategic.

    Strategic Intelligence is a type of Competitive Intelligence produced for strategic purposes. Customers of SI include individuals involved in strategic decision-making. From the process perspective, Strategic Intelligence can be seen as a part of Competitive Intelligence as it is also a systematic and continuous process with a purpose to facilitate decision-making with needed and timely intelligence input delivered in actionable form.

    The major difference between SI and CI is that SI actions focus strictly on supporting strategic decision-making by monitoring aspects with strategic significance.

    Users of SI are primarily individuals involved in strategy development. Additionally, a SI time horizon is broad and the focus is on all significant events: past, present and future events. In short, Strategic Intelligence can be defined as:
